This decoy can be tossed out with your other decoys anywhere in the spread you want to place it. Since ducks tend to want to land near this decoy, I usually try to place it in, or at the edge of the ‘landing hole’ that I leave in my set.
Once your decoys are all set out and you are back in your blind you can simply turn the Pumper decoy on using either of the two remotes that come with it (the remotes will work farther than you can shoot). The Pumper will then start to squirt water in pulses that last about 1/3 second and repeat about once each second. Because the spray tube outlet is located on one edge of the decoy, the force of the water jet causes the decoy to rock and bounce making plenty of large ripples in the water. As the spray of water lands back on the water it also creates more ripples and splash.
I believe the Pumper’s best duck-attracting feature is the sparkle of the spray as it catches the sunlight. This can be seen from a VERY LONG distance. I am amazed at the number of ducks that turn and head my way when I know they are too far away to see my other decoys clearly but are not too far to see the sparkle of the spray. Due to this, I have found that the Pumper is MOST effective on calm, sunny days but still is a great addition to my spread even on cloudy or windy days.
There are other decoys on the market that are similar to our Pumper. Each of these others use wires that run back to your boat and which must be connected to your boat’s battery. Our decoy has all of the good points of those decoys and also has the added values of remote control and having a power source that is self contained. Just think about how many times you have had to crank up your boat and chase down a cripple and you will quickly see why having a decoy wired to your boat is not the best design.
As far as we know, our Pumper decoy is legal to use in all states. Some states have outlawed the use of spinning wing decoys either fully or for part of the waterfowl season. Our pumper offers the eye-catching attraction of the spinning wing decoys while still being legal to hunt over. As game laws can change from time to time, we suggest that you check your state’s wildlife laws before using this or any motorized decoy.
